Fast reactions are mixing sensitive as the reaction rates are comparable to or faster than mixing time scales. Typically, fast reactions accompany side reactions which result in impurity formation. This is due to the presence of highly reactive chemical species which results in over-reaction (conversion of product to impurity) or a competitive side reaction (conversion of one of the starting materials to impurity). It is important to avoid high local concentration- that means in fed-batch (semi-batch) reactions, feed tube location, feed time and feed concentration are important scale-up parameters. It is important to identify detailed mixing characteristics prior to scale-up to minimize surprises and failed batches.
